Manek Chowk’s Gujarat Food Haven Shuts for Road Revamp

Manek Chowk, Ahmedabad’s beloved night food market, is taking a rare break starting today, Monday, February 24, 2025. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has kicked off a road resurfacing project to fix long-standing issues, leaving foodies curious about their next snack fix.

A Five-Day Closure

For the first time in over two decades, this iconic spot will stay closed from Monday to Friday. The last full shutdown was back in 2002 due to riots. Now, it’s all about giving the roads a much-needed makeover.

Why the Revamp?

Years of patchy repairs have left Manek Chowk’s roads bumpy and prone to waterlogging during monsoons. The AMC is using a milling technique—scraping off old layers before laying fresh ones—to smooth things out and tackle flooding woes.

A Win for Stall Owners

Local food vendors are cheering the move. Mulchand Nagar, head of the Manek Chowk Food Association, runs a stall here for 50 years. He calls it a “smart step” that doubles as a mini vacation for tired owners.

Customer Benefits Too

Anil Gupta of Asharfi Kulfi fame agrees. He says better roads mean happier customers—no more dodging puddles while grabbing a late-night kulfi or pav bhaji. It’s a win-win for all.

A Heads-Up for Foodies

Regular visitor Dhiru Parmar welcomes the upgrade but warns fellow food lovers to plan ahead. “Not everyone knows it’s closed,” he says. “You might show up hungry and leave disappointed!”

AMC’s Big Plan

V K Mehta, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Central Zone, explains this is the first major resurfacing in 15 years. Alongside roads, footpaths are getting a facelift too, promising a fresher Manek Chowk by week’s end.

What’s Next?

The closure runs through February 28, 2025. Until then, Ahmedabad’s foodies will need to scout other haunts. Will the revamped roads make the wait worth it? Stay tuned!
